Understanding the bioeconomy

The bioeconomy is the production of renewable biological resources and their conversion into food, feed, energy, chemicals and other materials. As the world moves away from its dependence on products manufactured from fossil fuels, it is important that we all understand how the bioeconomy works and contributes to sustainability.

The Bioeconomy Game uses a simulation style mechanism to help players understand how a city or locality can function as a bioeconomy, developing their understanding of how bio-based products can be created and used to support sustainable growth in the area.

Players are divided into teams that represent different communities in a city. Their objective is to minimise the amount of waste going to landfill, and to instead create value from waste by reusing and recycling it in innovative and sustainable ways. Teams will be faced with challenges which they must overcome and opportunities to improve the bioeconomy through investing in recycling technologies and infrastructure.
